Author: DauntPerplexity

Spoilers: We’ll just say season 5

13. Keep Holding On – Avril Lavigne
You’re not alone
Together we stand
I’ll be by your side
You know I’ll take your hand
When it gets cold
And it feels like the end
There’s no place to go
You know I won’t give in

“Cas, put the sword away,” Dean said, as he stepped toward the angel who stood frozen in his place. “Cas.”

His chest heaved. His eyes were trained on the body that lay at his feet. He ignored the sound of footsteps coming toward him and blood dripping off the end of his blade. “Mathiel,” he gasped and the sword fell from his fingers. Instead of falling to the floor with a clank, it floated down in the form of a bloody feather.

“Cas?” Dean rushed over to the angel’s side and kicked the feather off to the side. He knelt in front of him. Castiel kept looking at his fallen brother, so Dean grabbed him by his chin and forced his eyes up. “Sam, move him,” Dean whispered.

“Sam. He was going to kill Sam.”

“We know.” Dean put his hands on the angel’s neck. “Thanks, Cas.”

“Dean, I don’t know if I can—”

“Come on, Cas. Don’t say that. Don’t even think like that.” He hated how lost the angel sounded.

“My brothers, their blood. It’s all on my hands.” He tried to fight out of Dean’s grip to look at his hands, but Dean wouldn’t let him. “I’ve killed them.”

“To protect us.”

“I… I don’t regret it.”

Dean moved his hands down to Castiel’s arms and moved to lift him up. He looked around and saw that Sam had moved the body out of Castiel’s view. “Cas. Come on, let’s get you cleaned up.” He got the angel to his feet and threw his arm around his shoulder. He pulled him close, supporting him, bearing most of his weight. “You got me, Cas.” Slowly he began to walk them toward the Impala.

“I know, Dean.”

He sounded so sad. Dean never realized how Castiel must have been feeling, killing his brothers. He couldn’t even imagine killing Sam, but here Castiel was, killing his brothers, more than one brother, to protect them. He didn’t think he’d ever be able to choose someone above family. Or people he considered family.

But maybe that was it. Maybe Castiel considered them family more than his actual family. “You’re going to get through this, Cas,” Dean said, moving his arm down to rub Castiel’s back.

“It’s just—”

“I know it’s hard,” Dean interrupted. He knew what the angel was going to say because they had had this conversation many times, but usually Dean was the one breaking down. “But you aren’t allowed to give up. Not while I’m here.”

“Dean,” Castiel whispered. Dean couldn’t see the tears that fell from Castiel’s cheeks but he knew that it was a lot because he felt the moisture on his shirt.

“You’re not giving up, Cas. Because if you give up, then what’s going to keep me going?”

“You have Sam.”

Dean swung around to glare at the angel. He grabbed him by his shoulders and squeezed them. “That’s not enough, Cas. I need you too. Promise me that you’ll keep fighting. You won’t lose hope or whatever is keeping you going.”

“Dean. I—”

Dean shook him hard. “Promise me that I have you on my side.” He wiped away Castiel’s tears.

Castiel stood, shocked and wide eyed. He slowly raised a hand to Dean’s arm. “You have me.”

14. Say (All I Need) – OneRepublic
Do you know where your love is?
Do you think that you lost it?
You felt it so strong, but nothing’s
Turned out how you wanted.

Well, bless my soul, you’re a lonely soul
Cause you won’t let go of anything you hold
Well, all I need is the air I breathe
And a place to rest my head

Do you know what your fate is?
And are you trying to shake it?

Bobby wished that he could’ve been the first person to recognize what was going on between the two of them. Unfortunately for Bobby, anything with eyes-human, animal, alien, angel, demon-could see that there was something more between the angel and his hunter charge.

What frustrated Bobby the most was that while everyone could see that there was something between Dean and Castiel, they were too dense to realize it, or they were trying to hide it from everyone.

The next time Dean, Sam, and Castiel made their way to Bobby’s, the first thing that Bobby did was pull Sam off to the side to talk. “So, what is going on between your brother and angel boy?” Bobby asked.

Sam stepped back, not sure that he heard Bobby correctly. “What?”

“You heard me.”

“Honestly? I have no idea.”

“Sam,” Bobby growled.

“Seriously, Bobby. I don’t have a clue. But you aren’t the only one who sees whatever you are seeing.”

Bobby sighed, took off his hat, and combed his fingers through whatever hair he had on his head. If Sam didn’t know what was going on, then he knew that the only way that he could would be to ask Dean or Castiel themselves.

And he knew that wasn’t going to be possible.

He went into his study and saw Castiel and sitting at his desk with his nose in a book while Dean was handing over a few more books. They acted like they were the only two people in the room. Bobby didn’t understand it because there was no way that he could move around without making any noise in his wheelchair.

Dean walked up behind Castiel and stood over the angel’s shoulder reading whatever he was reading. He put a hand on Castiel’s arm and leaned forward, bringing their faces closer to each other.

Castiel looked up to Dean and Dean smiled.

Bobby hated to ruin such an intimate moment. But then again, he didn’t. “Angel boy, I need your help.”

Dean stepped away from Castiel so quickly that he hit one of my bookshelves, knocking a few books off. Castiel looked at Dean, as if he were asking for permission. Dean barely nodded before bending down to pick up a fallen book. “Of course, Bobby,” Castiel replied.

He followed Bobby out of the study and into the kitchen. Spread out all over the table were books and papers that had things written in a language that Bobby had never seen before. “Translate,” Bobby said, pushing a book to him.

For a few minutes, the only sound in the kitchen was pages turning. “This says—”

“What is going on between you and Dean?”

Castiel looked up from is book. “Going on?”

“Like relationship wise.”

“We’re friends.”

“That’s it?”

“I pulled him from Hell. We weren’t friends at first, but—”

“I know the story, wings,” Bobby interrupted. He then realized how bad of an idea it was to approach Castiel first.

They went back to translating the scripts, few words exchanging between them.

Castiel stayed for dinner that night. He didn’t eat anything. He just sat next to Dean, carrying on with whatever conversations were shared between the four of them.

After dinner, Castiel went back to translating the books Bobby had and Sam helped. Dean stayed back and helped Bobby with the dishes. Bobby cleared off the table while Dean washed the dishes he brought over. “Something you need to tell me, Dean?”

“No? Is there?” Bobby looked over to Castiel who was sitting in his study and Dean followed his gaze. “Do you want met o ask him to leave?”

“No,” Bobby said quickly. “Do you want him to leave?”

“No. He’s helping you, isn’t he?” Dean asked.

Bobby sighed when he knew that he wasn’t going to get anywhere in the conversation. They were speaking in circles and then they would only get bigger unless Bobby set it right. “Boy, if you’re keeping something from me—”

“Like what?” Dean said, the pitch of his voice rising when he didn’t know why he was getting threatened.

“Nevermind,” Bobby mumbled. “Don’t forget to put the dishes away.” He rolled away without saying anything else.

It wasn’t that Bobby disapproved of Dean possibly falling for the angel. It was quite the opposite. Dean needed someone to care for him. He needed a friend.

Dean found it in Castiel.

And most importantly, he found someone that he could probably love.

Castiel kept Dean’s head on straight. He didn’t care about all of the mistakes Dean made in the past. He made it through all the walls and defenses that Dean had put up in record time.

Castiel could protect Dean when he couldn’t.

Castiel made Dean feel important. Dean made Castiel human.

He realized that they were good for each other.

He just wanted the both of them to admit it to him, or at least tell him.

If Bobby needed any more proof that there was something going on between Dean and Castiel. All he had to do was look at how they slept. Especially the day that they brought Castiel to his house, injured by one of his brothers.

They patched him up and Dean let him sleep in his bed.

Dean swore up a storm when Bobby asked him what happened. He screamed and swore, calling Castiel stupid for getting hurt. Bobby heard the way Dean’s voice cracked as he tried to sound angry instead of scared. Strike one.

Then Dean stayed up for three nights, sitting with the angel, holding vigil until Castiel woke up. All the while, taking back everything name he called the angel when they first brought him in. Strike two.

And last, he refused food. Strike three, and he was out.

Out cold, at least. Not out about whatever he was feeling for Castiel. Because that would’ve been too easy.

Bobby and Sam maneuvered Dean onto his bed, putting enough space between him and the angel. They also made sure that Dean was on his side, facing the window while Castiel was facing the door.

Bobby and Sam rolled and walked out of the room leaving them to sleep.

A couple of hours later, Bobby rolled back into the room to check if either of them was awake. While Castiel was still in the same position they had left him in, Dean in that time had rolled onto his stomach and closer to Castiel.

Bobby didn’t think much of it until he saw that Dean had a hand on Castiel’s side. Not just on Castiel’s side, but slipped under the shirt Dean put on him. To anyone else, it didn’t mean anything, but to Bobby, who knew Dean inside and out, the small touch was protective, but more importantly, possessive.

Dean was staking his claim on the angel, and no one, human, demon, angel, or even God, would be able to say differently.

Too bad the boy was too stubborn to say it out loud, when he was awake.

He rolled out of the room, leaving the two of them to rest up awhile more.

A few more hours after that, Sam and Bobby went back into the room, hoping that they were finally awake. Bobby saw that their positions on the bed had switched once more. “That’s interesting,” Sam whispered.

Interesting was the simplest word to describe what they were looking at.

Dean had rolled over from his stomach to his back with one of his hand’s was behind his head, which was turned to face Castiel. Dean’s other arm was stretched out and his bicep was being used as a pillow by Castiel.

Castiel’s arms were tucked into the small space between their bodies.

They looked comfortable.

Like they had done this before.

Yeah, there was definitely something going on between Dean and Castiel.

15. More than Anyone – Gavin DeGraw
Look in my eyes, what do you see?
Not just the color
Look inside of me
Tell me all you need and I will try
I will try

I’m gonna love you more than anyone
I’m gonna hold you closer than before
And when I kiss your soul, your body’ll be free

I found him sitting outside with Bobby’s dog, Dante, lying next to him. “What are you doing out here, Cas?”

He looked up at me, surprised. His blue eyes widened when he realized that I was standing right above him. I’m stealthy. “I decided to keep Dante company.” I looked down and saw that Castiel had had his hand buried in Dante’s fur. “He was lonely.”

I sat down on the other side of the angel. “Cas, honestly. What are you doing out here?”

“They’re your friends, Dean. I didn’t think you’d notice that I slipped out for a moment.”

Of course I noticed, stupid angel. I noticed the second out were out of my sight. It just took me awhile to find you because I kept getting stopped by everyone. “Why would you think that I wouldn’t notice?”

“Dean, there are a lot of hunters in that house. They’re looking to you for something. Right now, they want to celebrate. Go celebrate today’s victory with them.”

“You should be celebrating with us,” I replied.

“I don’t know those hunters, Dean. I don’t drink. They’re your friends. If I’m in there, you’ll be constantly asking me if I’m all right. And I don’t want to be a distraction.”

“From?” I needed him to tell me what he was going to distract me from, because I had no clue.

He sighed and his shoulders slumped, defeated. “Dean, you should be in there celebrating instead of out here with me and Dante.”

“And while I’m in there, what are you going to do?”

“Probably just sit out here.”

“Why would you do that?”

“I’ve already told you.”

“Then I’m sitting out here with you,” I replied. He stared at me with those wide eyes and tilted his head the only way that he could. “Don’t give me that look.”

“But the other hunters.”

“They’re getting drunk enough with out me.”

“There are a lot of beautiful women in there, Dean.”

And there it was. The reason why he didn’t want to be a distraction. “Cas,” I sighed. I put a hand on his lap, assuredly. “You.”

“What about me?

“Just you,” I sighed. I love you. “I love you.”

“You care about me.”

“I love you.”

“No, you don’t, Dean.”

I wanted to shake the angel for his stubbornness. “Don’t tell me how I feel, Cas.” What I did do was grab him by his face and hold his gaze to mine. I could tell that he didn’t like being held under a microscope, as his eyes didn’t quite meet mine. “Cas,” I whispered, my tone not matching the force I held him with. “I love you.”

“Dean.”

“You read me the second you looked into my eyes in the barnyard after you pulled me out. You saw through all of the bull and defenses I put up. With just a look in my eyes.” He never stopped looking. “What are they telling you now?”

I sat there while he looked up and stared into my eyes. I waited. It felt like hours passed before he finally opened his mouth to say something. “A lot.”

A lot? “Anything specific?”

“Dean, you aren’t that easy of a person to read. There is always a flood of emotions that course through you at any given moment.” He paused and blinked. He put his hands on mine and held them. “When I can read you, it’s because there is something in you that shines brighter than everything else.”

“Can you sense anything like that now?”

He brought our hands down and gave me an encouraging squeeze. “Love.”

“For?”

“Pie.”

I blinked a couple of times, shocked. He just made a joke. I let out a short laugh to let him know that his joke wasn’t wasted. “Cas. Seriously.”

“I know, Dean. Love is always on the surface with you. This one is different though.”

“It better be,” I replied. I finally had enough with his stubbornness, his denseness, and his confusion. I grabbed the front of his trenchcoat and crashed our lips together. At first, I was doing all the work and was scared that Cas was going to knock me unconscious, but slowly he responded.

For a moment I thought about what Cas was sensing right now. I wondered if he was overwhelmed with all the emotions I was feeling. I stopped thinking and wondering as soon as I remembered that I needed to breathe.

I pulled away slowly. He kept his eyes closed and his head bowed. “You all right?” He let out a breath and nodded. “You sure, Cas?”

He nodded again, but I needed words for reassurance. “I’m fine.”

“You aren’t going to fly off and leave me alone with Dante, are you?”

He opened his eyes and stared at me. “I don’t think I’d be able to leave you,” he replied. My chest tightened at the admission. “And I don’t think you’d let me.”

I bit my lip to keep my smile from getting too big. “Damn straight.” This time I cupped his face and brought us together, our second kiss, more sensual than the first.

A thousand more thoughts raced through my mind. The most prevalent thought was how much I loved this man I was kissing. And how I’ll probably never love anyone like that again.

“Me too,” Cas whispered into our kiss, smiling. “Me too.”

16. He Heals Me – India.Irie (Bonus)
I told him my biggest secret
And he told me four
He smiled at me and said
That makes me love you more
And then he made me laugh
And I knew it was a sign
That he was the man
That I wanted in my life

Dean sat against the headboard in the room in a place that he finally considered home. After all of the fighting that had lasted many lifetimes for everyone involved, he could finally take sometime to himself. Some time to breathe and realize that they won.

They won.

After all the fighting and destruction and all the evil that he had to deal with when the Apocalypse came around. At the end of it all, they won.

It was all worth it.

Sam was forgiven and Bobby was healed. And Dean… well, he didn’t know what he got out of it. Even so, he still thought that he was going to lose the one thing that he cared about.

Castiel.

The angel was injured in the final battle. By orders of his Father, he was to be taken into Heaven to be healed and forgiven. And Dean thought that he would never see his angel again.

But the angel had done everything he’d set out to do. Pull him from Hell. Save his life over and over again. Die for him. Heal his broken soul. Find God so that he wouldn’t have to use Michael as a vessel. Even after all Castiel did for him, he never thought that the angel would choose him over Heaven.

But there the angel was, naked, curled into his side, and breathing into his chest, with his arms wrapped around his waist. Dean’s arms wrapped his shoulders, pulling him close. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you. I love you,” he whispered into Castiel’s hair.

“I know,” Castiel replied. He lifted himself off of Dean’s naked chest and stared at him. “How long have you been awake?” he said with a smile.

Dean laughed at Castiel’s bed hair. “Not long,” Dean replied. He ran his fingers through Castiel’s hair to try and tame it. It didn’t make a difference. He laughed again. The laugh was followed by a long sigh. “I want more days like this.”

“I know,” Castiel said again. “So, what’s the matter?” Castiel asked, tilting his head.

He couldn’t help but think about the first time that the met. The angel asked him that same question, with his signature head tilt. “Nothing.”

Castiel frowned. “You’re lying.”

“When you ask that question, it sounds like you’re asking ‘What’s wrong’ instead. Nothing is wrong. For the first time in my life.”

“I know,” Castiel agreed. “So, what are you thinking about?”

After all the time that they spent together, it still unnerved Dean how easily Castiel could read him. But he would get use to it in time. “You know, I prayed for the first time in a long time.”

“I know,” Castiel repeated.

“Okay, Mr. Know-it-all,” Dean replied. “Just because you tell me everything.”

“Sorry,” Castiel said, biting his lip.

Dean grinned at how innocent his angel looked. He put his hands on Castiel’s cheeks and pulled him up to meet him. He placed a soft kiss on his lips. “So, I’m guessing you know what I prayed for?”

“No.”

“I prayed that they’d let you stay,” Dean replied.

“I didn’t know that,” Castiel whispered.

“I still can keep a secret from you,” Dean said with a smile.

“I guess you can,” Castiel said. He bent back down to kiss Dean one more time. He rested his forehead on Dean’s, letting out a slow breath. “I love you too.”

With a smile, Dean whispered, “I know.”

This was... wow. :D I especially loved the last one, but all of them were fantastic. I liked the different POVs, and the ones where there was just dialouge. <3

I wasn't sure about how the just dialogue stories would go, so I'm glad that you liked them.

The last story was probably one of my favorite ones to write.

Thank you for reading!

All of these are so tender, and I like the sparse style.

Particularly loved this line: I—Damnit, Cas! Come back. Cas! I was trying to tell you that I love you too. Stupid angel.

Well, after havin had this one my memories list for months, maybe it's finally time to step in and say something.

I absolutely ADORE these little drabbles. They're all so cute and romantic and sometimes funny as well. I think my all-time favourite is #11, the whole "you gotta tell him yourself Dean otherwise he'll keep thinking him sacrificing himself isn't a big deal" thing.

This part, from #15, makes me all warm inside: Of course I noticed, stupid angel. I noticed the second you were out of my sight. It just took me awhile to find you because I kept getting stopped by everyone.

Oh, it's cool, bb! Don't even worry about it. :)

Oh, thank you so much. I tried to make sure that they weren't all one type of mood and that there were different stories to tell. That was a fun one to write. It just needed to be said. Right?

That was one of my favorite lines to write in this entire thing.

Thank you for reading!
