Author’s Note: Just something that came to me. I had to write something else because my brain needed a break from my [livejournal.com profile] dc_everafter  story. This is what it cranked out.
Author’s Note #2: I guess I want to say this if for [livejournal.com profile] kaiyote  because she’s been reading some fic with Balthazar that she hasn’t liked the result. I hope this turns out okay. Also for [livejournal.com profile] squishyball  and [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452 . Who, with their constant talk of Balthazar, have made me want to write a story with him in it.

It was one o’clock in the morning and Dean was nowhere near as tired as he needed to be to be able to get even a minute of sleep. He had no idea how Sam was able to sleep after the few days that they spent in the godless, demonless, angelless world.

But in reality, they were only gone for a few minutes. The storm still raged outside, and Bobby was still out. When he came back with alcohol in hand, he asked if he missed anything.

Both of them said no and Bobby knew that they were lying. He didn’t press them for answers because how much trouble could they get in in half an hour at his house. But he did see the mess in his study. Maybe it was better that he didn’t know.

Dean had wandered out into the middle of the junkyard. He didn’t want to wake his brother or Bobby with the yelling he knew he was going to do. “Cas!” he started yelling. “Cas, get your ass down here, right now!”

The yelling continued for two and a half hours. But he wasn’t about to give up, even if he had to yell at Castiel telepathically.

He heard the sound of wings flapping, but he didn’t turn around. He knew that it wasn’t Castiel. “Go away,” he said. “I wasn’t calling for you.”

“He’s busy,” Balthazar said.

Dean turned around to face the angel. “Well, too bad. I need to talk to him.”

“Well, he can’t come to the phone right now.”

Dean rolled his eyes. He really did not want to have to deal with Balthazar at the moment. “Cas!” he continued yelling.

“You’re going to lose your voice.”

“Why are you here anyway? Are you intercepting my calls?”

“I was in the neighborhood,” he replied. “And you’re screaming so loudly you could wake the dead.”

“Whatever,” Dean scoffed. “Cas! Get down here right now!”

“I don’t know what he sees in you,” Balthazar mumbled under his breath.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Why he keeps risking everything for you?”

“Everything? Like what?”

“What the hell does everything mean to you?”

“You know what, Balthazar, you can take your comments and—”

“Dean.”

He spun around and saw Castiel standing behind him. “Finally,” he said.

“Yes, Dean?”

Dean winced at how with those two words, Castiel sounded more like a servant than anything else. “I’ve been screaming for you for hours.”

“And in Heaven it sounds like days, maybe even weeks,” Castiel sighed. “Unless this is urgent, I have to leave.”

“No, no you’re not,” he said, grabbing onto Castiel’s arm. He’d risk not being able to use the bathroom for a week to follow Castiel wherever he went. They needed to talk. “Not until I get some answers.”

“Can this wait until some other time?”

“No,” he answered. He walked over to Castiel, getting into his personal space. For once Castiel looked like he was the uncomfortable one. “What is going on with you?”

“Cas, let’s go,” Balthazar said, stepping toward them. He put a hand on the small of his back, leading him away from Dean. He’d save his brother from feeling any discomfort.

Dean watched as Castiel’s shoulders slumped. He walked over to the angels and spun Castiel around by grabbing his hand. “You said that you’ll explain it to me when you have the time.”

“I know what I said, Dean.” He sounded so tired.

“Today is that day.”

“Dean, I can’t.”

“What is going on in Heaven?” Dean asked. He genuinely wanted to know. After all this time, he hadn’t asked Castiel once. It was putting a strain in their relationship.

Castiel sighed, needing to answer the question because for once in their relationship, Dean asked about his well-being. There was no predicting when it would happen again. “I already told you. It’s war.”

“I got that,” Dean said. “How bad is it?”

“Not as bad anymore. At least right now.”

“Okay. How bad was it?” he corrected.

“A nightmare,” he whispered. “Fights that go on and on. Burnt wings. Angels were friends one moment, then enemies the next. Grace spilling everywhere on the battlefield. Running down your arms. Splattering on you and trying to fuse with your own grace. You can’t even take the time to say goodbye to someone you called your brother before you are being attacked by another angel.”

“Cas…”

“I didn’t want it to come down to Earth.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. Then he looked up into the black sky. “Every moment I’m up there, I hope I’m doing enough to protect you down here.”

Dean felt like an ass when Castiel left him and his brother earlier that day. Now, he felt like a total douchebag. “Cas,” he whispered. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“I didn’t want you to. Not this much.”

“Yeah, but. God, I feel like such a dick.”

“Dean. You have your own problems here. On Earth. Besides, there is nothing that you could have done to be able to help me with my fight in Heaven.”

“Cas, I’m—”

“Dean, don’t.”

“Please, Cas,” Dean pleaded. “Just accept my apology. God knows you deserve it.”

“All right,” he said with a nod.

Dean smiled. “That wasn’t the apology.” How he missed Castiel just being Castiel. He cleared his throat and grabbed Castiel by his upper arms to hold him in place. “Cas, I’m sorry for acting like such a douchebag since I’ve started hunting again. You never deserved any of it and I’m sorry for that.”

“You’re apology is accepted, Dean.”

“Seriously, Cas,” he said, shaking the angel once. “You don’t have to keep taking this crap from me when you have something so much bigger on your plate. And this apology goes for every time that I yell at you after this, because of the heat of the moment and I just forget.”

“I’ll remember that the next time you chastise me. But I know you don’t mean it. Most of the time.”

“I just…” He wanted to say that he missed having Castiel around, but that statement would definitely be treading in chick flick moment territory. He wanted to say that he cared about him even if he had a hard time showing it.

“I know, Dean,” Castiel replied.

Dean leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on Castiel’s lips. He pulled back and smiled, which in turn made Castiel smile.

“Well, that was a great heart to heart,” Balthazar said. Dean and Castiel both flinched when they realized that the other angel was still there. “But now we winged creatures have to be on our way.”

“What is your problem?” Dean was angry that Balthazar had to ruin a moment between him and Castiel. He was ready to charge Balthazar.

“Dean, leave it alone,” Castiel said, holding Dean back by his upper arm.

“No, I want to know why you don’t like me.”

“Now, where did you get that idea?” Balthazar sauntered over to the two of them.

“Really?”

Castiel stepped between the two men and pushed them apart with a hand on their chests. “Dean. Balthazar. Stop.”

“Stay out of it, Cas,” they both said at the same time.

He sighed and dropped his arms, which caused the two of them to move toward each other again. “I have places that I—”

“Don’t move,” they yelled at him again.

Castiel put his hands up, defeated and leaned against one of the rusty cars. He really did not want to get yelled at again by the two of them. He knew that they were two of the most stubborn beings in creation.

“Why are you so protective of him?” Dean asked.

“Dean. He’s my brother,” Castiel said. “You of all people should understand what an elder sibling would do for the younger.”

“Youngest,” Balthazar corrected.

“Youngest?” Dean asked. He was surprised at the new fact. He shook his head. “No, this isn’t like a regular overprotective older sibling relationship. There something different about it.”

“You cannot possibly understand the relationships between angels.”

“You’re right.”

“Filthy human.”

“Do you want to tell me what your problem is with me?”

“There is a laundry list of problems that I have with you.”

“Well, start talking because we need to resolve this.”

“And why is that?”

“Because I don’t like leaving Cas to depend on you while you’re fighting in Heaven.”

“You can’t trust me. You can’t trust me?” Balthazar yelled, incredulous.

“Balthazar,” Castiel spoke up. His tone was one of warning.

“I know the feeling’s mutual,” Dean said.

“Damn right, I don’t trust you. And you want to know why? Because Castiel’s been injured more times since he’s known you than his entire existence before. You’ve gotten Castiel killed multiple times. You’re been the reason he had to endure torture that I had to witness. It’s because of you that he’s fighting this war in the first place. And because you took him from me.”

“What?” Dean asked.

“Ignore the last part,” he said, hoping that he had not said it loud enough.

“I took him from you? What is this? Some lover’s spat.”

“I don’t have to stay here for this.”

“Balthazar,” Castiel said. His eyes were pleading for the other angel to stay.

Balthazar groaned. He could never deny his youngest brother. Then again, not many angels could. “What?”

“I need you two to trust each other.”

“You trust him,” Balthazar said. “That’s enough.”

“No, it’s not.” Castiel grabbed Balthazar and Dean by the front of their shirts, bunching it in his hand. “If you two care about me at all, we need to settle whatever animosity you have between you two.”

Dean laid his hand gently on the one that was grasping his shirt. “Cas, you can’t just expect two people, who have a ton of problems between them, to fix their problems in a night.”

Castiel let you a breath and let go of their shirts. “You’re right. Both of you.” He paused for a second. “I’m surrounded by so much fighting that the last thing I want is it to be between two people that I care about.”

“Damnit, Cas,” Balthazar replied. His youngest knew just what to say to make him feel guilty. He reached up and grabbed Castiel’s tie with one hand and the lapel of Dean’s jacket with the other. “Hold on.”

Without any warning, Balthazar flew them somewhere. When they landed, they found themselves in a room. But not just any room, it was a hotel room. With a king-sized bed.

“What the hell are we doing here?” Dean asked.

“Balthazar, I don’t—”

“You two are wearing too much clothes.” He snapped his fingers and Dean and Castiel’s clothes were immediately shed.

Dean’s hands quickly went to cover his junk. “Dude! What the hell?”

“You two need to unwind. Cas, don’t worry about Heaven, I’ll watch over everything while you’re gone. Dean, in Earth time, when you get back, you’d be gone for a couple of minutes at the most.”

“Balthazar, thank you.”

Balthazar nodded at his brother. He was about to fly away when he felt a hand on his arm. He looked down and was surprised to see that it belonged to Dean.

“Wait,” he whispered.

“What?” Balthazar sighed.

“You loved him?”

“Love,” Balthazar whispered, his throat tightening up. He hated that he had to admit it to the human.

“Well, I do too,” Dean said with a nod. “So we figured out why we don’t like each other. And now we can fix it.”

“And how do you propose we do that?”

“We can put aside our differences for Cas.”

“I think that we will be able to do that.”

“I think so too.”

“Okay,” Balthazar said, clapping his hands twice. “Well, now that we’ve settled everything. I guess that means I should—”

“Balthazar, he’s asking you to stay,” Castiel interrupted.

“What?” He turned to look at the human in the room. “What?”

“Stay with us,” Dean stated. “I’m not touching you. And you definitely aren’t touching me. But we can try to share Cas.”

“You’re all right with that?” Dean nodded. “And you, Cas? Are you all right with this?”

Castiel nodded, making eye contact with both other men in the room. “If it gets you two to stop fighting,” he replied.

Balthazar walked up to Castiel and cupped his face. He rubbed his brother’s jaw with thumb. “No, not for us. For you.”

Castiel leaned into his brother’s touch. “I want this. I want both of you,” he whispered.

“Good,” Balthazar said just as softly as Castiel was speaking. “A little greedy. But good.”

Dean spun Castiel around and crashed their lips together. He deepened the kiss, smiling and loving that the fact Castiel didn’t actually have to breathe. He was surprised when Castiel moaned into his mouth.

He pulled back and saw that Castiel’s eyes were still closed. He then saw that Balthazar had an arm wrapped around Castiel and was sucking on his neck.

Balthazar looked up and smirked. He napped his fingers and lost all of the clothes he was wearing. He held Castiel tighter when the youngest angel’s legs gave out on him. “Bed, now.”

“Yeah,” Dean agreed. “Definitely.”
