Part 1

Dean woke up the next morning and reached over to Castiel’s side of the bed and was disappointed to find that he wasn’t there. It actually looked like Castiel didn’t sleep in at all. He would’ve known if he came in because he had a hard enough time getting to sleep last night.

Even though he finally was tired enough, he found that it was pointless to try and sleep since the sun was coming up. He needed all the time he could if he was going to find his ring.

He walked downstairs and saw Bobby and Sam sitting at the kitchen table with the newspaper sprawled out on it. He sat down on one end, opposite from Bobby. He reached for the sports section and read the first headline before he threw the paper down with a sigh. “Cas didn’t come home last night.”

Bobby and Sam looked up at the same time. “Yes, he did,” Sam replied.

“What?” Dean asked, sitting up.

“He came in, saw me and Bobby, said a few words, and then he headed upstairs.”

“He came home last night?” Dean asked.

“Yes, Dean,” Sam answered. “We both saw him.”

“But he didn’t come into bed,” he whispered, not wanting them to hear him. “He didn’t even come into our room.”

“Did you lock the door?”

“Like that would’ve stopped him.”

“You never know, Dean,” Sam sighed.

“What the hell is going on?” he yelled, standing up quickly and knocking down the chair he was sitting in. Instead of going back upstairs to his room, he took a turn and stepped out of the house.

“Dean,” Sam said, running after his brother. “Dean. Dean!” he yelled.

“What?” he replied, turning around.

Sam had to stop in his place and actually take a few steps back when he saw the look on his brother’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know.”

“Dean, just stop for a second and talk to me. I can help you out with whatever is going on if you just talk to me.”

“I don’t know if you can help me.”

“Dean, tell me what’s going on and I can at least try.”

Dean started to pace back and forth in front of his brother. He ran a hand up and down his face. He knew he had to tell his brother what was going on. “I lost it, Sammy,” Dean whispered.

“What?” Sam asked.

“I can’t find it. It just wasn’t there when I woke up.”

“Dean, what are you talking about?” Sam asked, confused.

Dean looked at his brother, realizing how vague he was being. “I…” he said, his voice trailing off and wanting to back down and change the subject.

“Dean,” Sam said, knowing exactly what his brother was thinking.

He slowly lifted his hand and brought it into his brother’s view. “I lost my wedding ring.”

“What?” Sam said, loud and surprised. “Where could you have lost it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you take it off?”

“Sam, you know that I thought that it was stuck on me forever.”

Sam put his hands up, defensive, even though Dean didn’t sound angry saying what he did. “I’m just asking, Dean.”

“It must’ve fallen off.”

“Dean, we’ll find it. Don’t worry.”

“I can’t let Cas see that I lost it, Sammy.”

“Is that why you’ve been avoiding him? Why you were yelling at him?” It was Sam’s turn to raise his voice.

“He can’t know.”

“He thinks he did something wrong by talking to that girl.”

“What? No.”

“Then tell him that.”

Dean ran his hand up and down his face a couple of time. “I can’t,” he said when he dropped his hands down to his sides.

“Why not?”

“Because it had to mean something that we couldn’t take it off before.”

“You’re worrying too much. And you’re being ridiculous.”

“No, I’m not. Because I lost my wedding ring.”

“So, you’re going to just keep avoiding him until you find it?”

He lost something, and now the universe had to pay. Or at least suffer. “Yeah.”

“That’s stupid.”

“I can’t disappoint him, Sam. Just… help me find it. Please.”

“Yeah,” Sam replied, knowing that his brother was desperate. “I think you’re being an idiot, but I’ll help you regardless.”

“Okay. So do you think we could do a locating spell or something on the ring?”

Sam rolled his eyes, knowing that his form of help would just be going along with whatever plan his brother had. He turned and headed toward Bobby’s study, knowing that Dean was following right behind him.

As good of an idea it was to use a locator spell on the ring, it got them nowhere. Not one of the six spells they had showed up on any maps. At one point, the spell led them to Illinois, and the brothers knew that something was wrong with it. There was no way that the ring could’ve traveled that far in a day.

There was the thought that since Dean and Castiel had the same rings, the spell locked on to Castiel’s ring. But then, that begged the question as to why Castiel was in Illinois.

The brothers came to the conclusion that the spell was faulty. Well, at least Dean did.

He retreated to his room and plopped himself onto his bed, wanting the whole situation to just go away.

He stared at his ceiling, willing himself to fall asleep. But like the night before that, he wasn’t able to. He needed to drink, or run a few miles. Anything to get himself exhausted enough that he just passed out.

He pulled open the door and turned to head toward the living room. He thought about turning on a light, but decided against it thinking it expended too much energy. The moment he fell over something in the middle of the hallway, he wished he could go back and turn on a light.

Luckily for him, he was able to stop himself from faceplanting on the floor. He quickly got himself to sit up and saw wide blue eyes that were able to pierce through the night staring at him. “Cas?” he asked.

“Dean?”

“Were you sleeping out here?”

Finally, the angel broke eye contact and looked down to his lap. “Yes,” he whispered. “I’m sorry that I was in your way.”

Dean shook his head. “Don’t be stupid. I wasn’t watching where I was walking. Why didn’t you come into our room?”

“The door was locked.”

Dean forgot that he locked it the night before so Sam wasn’t able to follow and bother him. “You could’ve flown in.”

“I didn’t want to make you angrier with me.”

“Cas,” Dean sighed. “It’s your room too.”

“I thought that you wanted some space.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” He stood up and dusted himself off. Instead of heading down the stairs, he walked back toward their room. “Come on.”

After half a moment of reluctance Castiel stood up from the floor and followed his husband inside. He stepped in and saw Dean sitting on the edge of the bed, facing the door. “I—”

“Get comfortable, Cas,” Dean replied. “Your clothes are on the chair.”

Castiel nodded and stripped out of his shirt and jeans and into his shirt and sweatpants. When he was done, he walked over and knelt down in front of Dean. “Are you all right?” he asked, putting a hand on Dean’s knee.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he replied.

“Is something bothering you?”

“You aren’t sleeping next to me.”

“But you’re—”

“I’m acting like a douche, Cas.” He took the hand that was on his knee and held it in his own. “Come to bed, please.”

“But I—”

“Didn’t do anything wrong,” Dean interrupted. “Cas,” he sighed, “can we talk about it after we’ve gotten a few hours of sleep?”

Castiel stood up. “Of course, Dean.” He walked over to his side of the bed and lied down.

With so much relief when he felt the opposite side of the bed dip, he maneuvered himself onto his side. He looked over and saw that Castiel was facing the opposite way. He had to keep himself from wrapping his arm around the angel’s waist and pulling him close.

Dean sighed and rolled over, facing the other way. He fell asleep knowing that Castiel was a few inches away from him. But hating every inch of it.

Dean woke up and saw Castiel still sleeping next to him. The angel was facing him, but for the first time since they’d been married, they were in the same bed, but they weren’t touching. Dean did not approve of it.

He reached out, placed a hand softly on Castiel’s shoulder. He was about to shake him awake, but he stopped himself. Something in him didn’t want to disturb his angel’s peace.

He slid out of bed and made his way quietly to the bathroom. He rinsed and dried his face. He sighed and looked at his ringless finger.

As good as he felt for getting a good night sleep, his anxiety didn’t go away. If anything, he felt worse because his husband was so close, but not close enough. He slapped the bathroom counter and groaned, knowing what he had to do.

He stepped out of the bathroom and saw Castiel out of bed, standing near the window and looking out it. “Cas?” Dean whispered, not wanting to startle him.

Castiel turned around and Dean saw how tired the angel looked. Dean finally realized how much his stupidity was affecting them both. “Yes, Dean?”

“I’m sorry,” he said, walking to his husband.

“What are you apologizing for?” Castiel asked, eyes wide, and stepping back.

Dean stepped forward and put his hands on Castiel’s shoulders to close the distance between them. “Being a jerk these last few days. You didn’t deserve it.”

“Dean, it’s all right.”

“No, it’s not.”

“No, if anything, I should be apologizing to you.”

And now it was Dean’s turn to be confused. He dropped his hands and stepped back. “What for?”

“For speaking with that girl. I should’ve told her that I was in a relationship, that I was married, as soon as I realized she was coming onto me.”

“Cas, it’s all right,” he said, shaking his head.

“But it made you angry.”

“Cas, it’s fine,” Dean said with a soft smile. “People want you. That means, at the end of the night, they’re jealous because they see that you come home with me.”

“Then—”

“I lost it.”

“What?”

Dean swallowed hard. It was now or never. He didn’t know if he could do it because his heart felt like it was in his stomach. “My wedding ring,” he whispered. “I lost my wedding ring.”

“Dean.”

“I know, it’s stupid. I should’ve told you the second it happened, but I didn’t want you to think that I tried to take it off or I was just irresponsible with it or I was angry or something. But after that night, it was gone. And I have no idea where it went. I went back to the bar and they didn’t have it. I turned this house and my car upside down. I don’t know where—”

“Dean.”

“I know my logic is dumb, Cas. I know that the ring doesn’t represent what we are to each other. But it’s ours. You put that ring on my finger and we were married.”

Castiel put his hands on Dean’s shoulders and shook him once. “Dean,” he said, one more time, trying to get Dean to listen to him.

“I know. I’m being ridiculous.”

“You didn’t lose it.”

“What? But…”

Castiel lifted up his left hand and Dean saw that there were two rings on his ring finger. He pulled off the top ring and held it out to Dean. “Here,” he whispered.

Dean reached for the ring and Castiel put it in his hand. “You… you had it?” he whispered.

Castiel nodded and looked away from him. “I… I found it on your pillow. I thought you’d taken it off. I thought that you—”

Dean wrapped his hand around the back of Castiel’s neck and brought their lips together before Castiel could finish the sentence. Dean kissed him like he was never going to do it again. Three days was long enough for him to go without kissing his husband.

Finally, he broke the kiss. “Don’t ever think that. Don’t you ever think that. Ever.”

“But.”

“What did I just say?”

“That we’re both stupid.”

Dean let out a short laugh. “Yeah. Yeah, we are.”

“I know that I shouldn’t have responded to the woman’s advances.”

“Cas, I wasn’t.”

“Dean—”

“I was jealous. I was really jealous.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I’m lucky to have landed an amazing catch. The world has a right to be jealous.” Dean took in a breath and let it out as a sigh, relieved. “I guess that we aren’t perfect.”

“I guess not.”

“Good, because I don’t want perfect,” Dean replied.

“I never thought that we were.”

“Is this our first fight?”

“We’ve fought many times before,” Castiel countered.

“Yeah, but as a couple. Is this our first couple fight?”

“We weren’t actually fighting, though.”

“Well, can we actually just count this as one and get it out of the way?”

“Why don’t we count one of the actual fights that we’ve had in the past as our first one and agree to never fight again?”

“I don’t know about that one, Cas.”

“We can try.”

Dean laughed again, feeling like it was forever since he had. “Okay.”

“I’d rather not fight, Dean.”

Dean sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed. He finally put his ring back on his finger. “I know.”

“But sometimes we’ll have to.”

“I know that too. But I’d rather we fix it. No secrets between us.”

“I like that idea.”

“Me too. But one thing is for sure.”

“What is that?”

“Even if we’re fighting, the fight needs to stop so we can get some sleep or neither of us will be bearable.”

“Okay,” Castiel agreed.

Dean grabbed Castiel’s wrist and pulled him forward. He leaned back and held Castiel to him so that his husband’s body blanketed his own. He kissed him once again, stopping only to catch his breath. “God, I’ve missed you.”

“I wasn’t very far.”

“Cas.”

“I’ve missed you too, Dean.”

“Never again, Cas. This is never happening again.”

Castiel nodded once. He crawled off of Dean and lied on his side. “Can… can you take the ring off again?” he asked.

Dean went to his ring with a shaky hand and pulled, not wanting the ring to come off because he had no idea that what that would mean. The ring didn’t budge. “No,” he replied with a sigh of relief. “Cas. Is someone just messing around with us?”

“I hope not, Dean.”

“That doesn’t matter if we hope not, because it feels like someone is messing with us.”

“Does it matter?”

Dean pulled Castiel in closer to him and kissed him in his hair. “If they keep taking you away from me, yeah, it does.”

“That can’t happen.”

“Yeah. I figured.”

“It won’t happen.”

“Okay. But we can’t stop it if whoever these rings are from wants to keep messing around.”

“We’ll figure it out, Dean.”

“Yeah. We will. Because we’re awesome.”

Castiel adjusted his position to lie on Dean’s chest. “We should go downstairs.”

“Why?”

“You don’t think Bobby and Sam—”

“They’ll know eventually. Three nights is too long, Cas.” Dean wrapped an arm around Castiel’s waist and rolled them over so that he was on top. He bent down and captured his husband’s lips in his own. “You’re awesome, Cas,” he said as soon as he needed a breath.

Castiel reached up with one had, craned his neck forward, and placed a kiss on Dean’s lips. “I love you too.”

“So, I’ve decided, we’re going to make up for lost time, and then we’re going to start trying to figure out who’s messing with us.”

“Okay.”

“We’re over-dressed.”

“Agreed,” Castiel said with a smile.
